This Week in the Studio: 10.03.06

Written by

Car crashes, illness and Martyn singing into the wrong side of a mic – bad news comes in 3′s.   Andy nails 1 in a trillion, Martyn sings like … Martyn, and every one gets a hoodie!  And Mike was named a 2010 Schoar!  A typical day at Abubilla Music…

We had two very different things going on in the Studio.  One was a frantic hand-off of ‘to do lists’ from Lou ‘Queen of the world’ Calf to the Assistants (see below).  Hunter and Hannah worked feverishly to do blogs, finish off bits of the Digital Strategy

Lou's King of the World

Lou then disappears from our lives for 16-18 weeks for her play, the Real Thing at the Old Vic.  She promises to remember the ‘little people’ but we’re not so sure…

Lou Promises to Remember the Little People

The other thing going on was a lot of songs… Andy and Jimmy started the morning inserting lots of guitars into Invading London and doing a new mix.    We then waited for others to join us, but they were droping like flies:

Sophie and Ed Wiped out Like Dead Flies

Sophie called first…sick and suffering.  Selfishly she refused to let Cecily come without her.   Then Ed called, reporting news of a car accident on the way over, where he was hit by a truck; he wasn’t injured but was shaken up and rightly return home for a cuppa tea.   He sent pictures:

Ed was luckily to escape from this one. Trumpet ok too...

Finally, Mike arrived, followed by Martyn and Rob; Martyn brought along Lola and Daisy.    Of course, little Lola was the inspiration for this song:

We all then rushed to the Studio and ‘finished off’ Big Knees.

Why Martyn was inspired to write a song about this picture none of us will ever know!

Sort of.  Martyn did a truly amazing set of vocals.  And Jimmy…well…having lost his pizza ordering duties to Hannah, is really left with just buttons and he sort of, well this is kind of embarassing, sort of …well, it’s hard to say it, but he kind of put the mic in backwards so Martyn was screaming his little head off into the back of the mic.   It says something for his vocals, not sure what exactly, that none of us noticed.

Jimmy's little trick with mics was as stupid as Bush with Binoculars (Look closely, their still covered!)

Andy was in the other room trying to make sense of Jimmy’s guide track on  One in a Trillion.  But when he returned he noticed something and then, well kind of rudely, told Jimmy that mic’s have two sides and Martyn had made love with the wrong one.   Hmmmmm….

We then laid down Andy’s new take on One in a Trillion, which is a real winner.

Andy's take on 1 in a Trillion is a Winner! (Screamin' bolt of lightnin')

He was on fire vocally.  So we jumped into the old version of One in a Trillion and the boys added guitars galore, vocals and harmonica.  It is now called She Knows.  Not sure what she knows yet, because we haven’t written the lyrics.  If any one knows what she knows we’d love to hear, cuz Jimmy has to write the lyrics.

Then all the boys left, dragging Lola and Daisy away from Lewie.    The assistants blogged their last, Lou left for greatness and Andy and I, with a bit of Vodka, turned to the guitars of Sat Out the 15th remake.  We got very, very trippy.   It is not clear the band will let us along in the studio together again… at least not with Vodka.

And finally, and most importantly, Mike is now a 2010 scholar with a cool little hoodie that announces the fact!    This entitles him to trips to Spain, unlimited studio time and when’s he’s ready the chance to write his own song!   Congrats dude..

The Proud Face of a 2010 Scholar!

That’s it.   Another full day next Saturday.
